Real Life: December 12-14, 2008

Well, the Woot folks are wooting off in Dallas, so what are us other suckers going to do about it? Discuss your weekend plans below, if you have any. Me, I have no particular plans, except hopefully to try to lay more bricks tomorrow. I won't ask for your help this time. I wouldn't turn it down, however, if you're into that sort of thing.

I might be pursuaded to have dinner somewhere tonight. You?

Stop! Bracket time!

Hey - is that whole Geeklife Footy League still going on? Isn't Porkchop winning? Did he already win? Who has the attention span for those kinds of things in this fast-paced, modern world? Not me. I prefer my tournaments of sports about which I know little to last only a few short weeks. Which is why I set us up the College Basketball Tournament brizzackets again this year. All the fame and glory can be yours if you set up your bracket by the start of the first game on THURSDAY, MARCH 20. So get to guessing!

Real Life: December 28 - 30

So I'm already starting to get depressed about only having 5 more days before returning to work (only 3 more "vacation days!"). I can't imagine how you poor people who have to work this week feel. Let's turn those frowns upside down, chase away those winter blues, and other such painful metaphors. Or are they similes? Idioms?

Irregardless (sic), we have plans to make/share for the weekend. Did I already miss my annual chance to see Josh and Amy, or anybody else that makes a holiday trip to the StL? Nathan, perhaps? If anybody sees one of those type people, you should tell them to come to Happylife tonight. To be held.... somewhere. No great ideas at the moment. Sorry.

And what else is happening this weekend? I mean, sure, we'll all be pre-partying for John and Newman's "No Strangers Vomiting on the Porch Rockin' New Years Eve." The question is HOW we will be pre-partying. And also if "pre-partying" is a verb, especially for people our age. Discuss.

P.S. - Only 37 days, 6 hours and 52 minutes until Superfoot!!1! The theme is cheese!

Real Life: November 9-11, 2007

Go me, it's my birthday. We're gonna party like it's my birthday. That means we're gonna eat burritos, then go to Ted Drewes, then sit around our house for a bit. And that's just Friday night!!1! I guess we should go to El Burrito Loco, because that's a place at which I like to eat and it usually has seating for the zillions of people who will be clamoring to join me for dinner. Clamoring, I tell you.

But what of the rest of the weekend? I get to have birthday dinner with the family on Saturday, but we might sneak out after that to go see The Mountain Goats for free at the SLU Billiken Club. Or maybe go see that one other show that I forgot about that's at the Gargoyle.

And your weekend? Could it possibly be as awesome as mine? Discuss. And also find photos of adorable kittens for Demanda's story elsewhere on this fine website.

Okay, I don't have time to post stuff now, because I gotta go to work, but this is the start of a Real Life post, and you all have 9 hours to discuss your weekend plans before I get home and check the site again. Impress me, people!!!

Friday: Dinner somewhere. Art show at Snowflake/City Stock. The Early brothers spin records at Teh Royale.

Saturday: Maybe hiking w/ Demanda and her man? Movie night at the other Amanda's place.

Sunday: Dunno. Or maybe I do know and I forgot.

Avatars, avatars, avatars!

Really I need Dave to write this story, since avatars don't show up in personal blogs, like mine. But I can cut and paste mine in:

 Me!!!1!

Hey look - the Simpsons Movie website lets you make your own Simpsonsy avatar. Then you can download it and make it your Geeklife avatar. Or your avatar for another website that people actually visit more than once a week. It's all the fun of having an avatar on Dave's Wii without the bother of driving all the way over to his house to admire it later, though also without the charm of getting to watch it play doubles tennis.

I like that they used pieces of actual Simpsons characters. For instance, mine has Chief Wiggum's family's nose. So make a Simpsons avatar and post it here. Or make one and wait patiently for Dave to post another story to Geeklife for you (and your avatar) to comment on.

Okay, I'm gonna keep it short and sweet, so you'll have more time to read about hockey. What are you/we up to this weekend?

Friday: Dinner at a place. I don't care where. 7:30. Discuss. Followed by drinking and viewing a reunion of the famed Early brothers as they spin records at Teh Royale. Followed by sleeping.

Saturday: I have heard of several yard sales, including one by Deb of Rockstar Rags fame, to be held in the 4000 block of Connecticut, and the Picker Family Garage Sale, on Sunshine and Hampton. Also there's apparently a retro one in Edwardsville, if I want to drive a bit. Otherwise, I aim to deal with various house/yard issues, then eat some food and do something later that evening. I don't know what.

Sunday: Like Saturday, only with fewer yard sales and more grocery shopping.

Looking at it all laid out like that, my weekend looks fairly lame. Can you do better?

Real Life: April 13 - 15, 2007

How will you be spending this Friday the 13th weekend? Here's my plan:

Friday: Happylife somewhere. Dare I suggest Burrito Loco? Avoid snow.

Saturday: Creating functional and hip furniture out of the large, flat boxes of Ikea particle board in our living room. Maybe seeing "Grindhouse" in the p.m.

Sunday: Various household chores. Maybe play boardgames or something in the evening? Look forward to the return of semi-normal temperatures.

p.s. For those of us who didn't ever check, here are the final standings from the Brizzackets. Looks like Adam went on to win it, and Joel finished second. I'm proud to say I clawed my way up to 10th place.

Geeklife Brizzackets!

It's time once again to demonstrate your extensive knowledge of college basketball in selecting the annual Geeklife Yahoo Brizzackets. Whether you're picking based on the school's geographic proximity to your grandma's house, which team's mascot would win in a fight, or alphabetically by last letter (I call that one!), your picks could win you a year's worth of bragging rights. Just ask, um, last year's winner. Who I forget right now. It wasn't me.

Anyhoo, Porkchop has been kind enough to set us up the brackets, so whether you intend to take days off of work to watch the games, or have no interest in supporting college athletics based on your ethical and moral beliefs, take ten minutes to make a stupid bracket, okay? Just use the following information to join the par-tay, then brag about your prowess on the message boards:

p.s. - Once you've got your bracket, go here to check up on its status.

Real Life: March 9 - 11, 2007

What's going on this weekend? Not much, as far as I know. I'll eat some food somewhere with some people this evening, I guess, then go watch Prof. Hotpants and Mr. Early spin some records at The Royale. As for the rest of the weekend, I don't got no particular plans that I can think of at the moment. You?

But meanwhile, I was listening to KWMU this morning and learned two shocking facts:

1. Longtime meteorologist Ben Able is retiring! This is sad because he's been on the air forever, but it's good for me because I have a Ben Able-related learning disability where I am incapable of hearing his forecast, even though I really want to. I just blank out while he's talking. I think it's because he talks about wind speed too much.

2. Springfield, MO and Springfield, IL are in the running to host the premier of The Simpsons movie in July. Road trip!

Any interesting local news you've stumbled on lately? Plans for the weekend that will result in interesting local news? Discuss.

Real Life: March 2 - 4, 2007

Okay, so Dave's taking care of some sad family business this weekend, so I'll write the post. If you haven't heard, I quit teaching this week so as to better rock and roll all night and party every day, so why not celebrate with some Happylife dinner somewhere? Given my uncertain earnings potential these days, I'd vote for somewhere easy on the wallet, like, oh, say, El Burrito Loco, but I'm an easygoing person and can be persuaded to go elsewhere.

Saturday I intend to sit and wait for the arrival of our washer and dryer, since Sears wouldn't deliver it last weekend because it was raining lightly, and they don't want their delivery guys getting their feet wet and catching cold. Saturday evening I intend to do something else, preferably something fun and not related to the delivery of major appliances.

Sunday afternoon I intend to get in a car with my sister and adorable niece and drive to Cincinnati so my sister can audition to be a ballerina, and I can babysit the niece while she does so. Also we get to see the sights of Cincinnati.

What do you intend to do this weekend?

Superfoot XI

For those of you too cool to read the Onion House's Myspace blog, you too are invited to Superfoot XI, held at our place. It's a chili cook-off, so bring your best vegetarian or meaty chili (preferably in crock-pot form). If you're not the chili-cooking-type, bring something that goes with chili, like beer. Or other stuff that's not alcohol, like oyster crackers, or a few pounds of cheese. Prizes will be awarded in three categories:

  • Best vegetarian chili
  • Best meat chili
  • Hottest or weirdest chili that's still edible and can be agreed on to be "chili"

Superfoot is Sunday, February 4. The kick off is, I believe, at 5:00, so feel free to show up anytime after, say, 4:00. Y'all come. We ain't got HD, and I don't think there's a Puppybowl on Animal Planet this year, but it will be a good time anyway.
