Real Life: Nov. 27-29, 2009

Yo - Thanksgiving weekend - wazzup? I think pretty much everybody's out of town (including us, until about 20 minutes ago). If anybody's reading this and interested, the fam' and I will be looking for dinner companions in a few hours. Holla.

Rest of weekend - Not driving to Iowa with a toddler. We've done that for the holiday season, thanks. You?

Go Porkchop, it was his birthday. Go Porkchop, it was his birthday...If I didn't have to go to work, I'd photoshop up a little porkchop with a birthday hat. Can somebody with a goof-off job get on that for me? Thanks.

I suggested that he should pick the Happylife restaurant, on account of it was his birthday, but he claims that's the worst present ever because he hates having the pressure of being the one to pick. So, um, somebody else pick. Plus, with Porkchop Jr.'s schedule, you never know who from our family will actually be awake and able to attend. I still vote no Applebee's, even if I'm not able to go, since I'll still have to put up with take-out.

What else is going on this weekend? I hear the Birke family is hosting a picnic on Sunday, so we'll get in on that action. Any excuse to hang out with Miles - that kid's a riot. Also maybe we'll sit around and sip some Woot wine, if the UPS guy times his delivery right. Otherwise, sittin' around waiting for that Indian summer the weather guy promised for next week.

You?

Hey, WTF, who dropped the ball on the HL posting? Me? Oh, right.

Tonight: Porkchop Jr. Jr's taking an early evening snooze, so maybe he'll wake up and be looking for dinner, or maybe we'll get take out - give us a call if you're reading this so late in the day. I hear Tim Hutchings is having an art opening tonight, but looks like we ain't making it.

Saturday: Maybe we'll head off for Strange Folk - let me know if you're interested... What's the happening on Saturday night? Beats me.

 Sunday: Who's to say?

Real Life: August 14 - 16, 2009

Okay, what's the plan, Pakistan? What's going on this weekend?

Friday: I wanna eat some food with some people. Also I want to look at Demanda and Christian's new dog, Hamcake, who's supposed to be released from the Humane Society this morning. I hear the Prof. is DJing with cocktails at teh Royale tonight, so that's going on too, though I'll probably be asleep by the time the fat beats commence to drop.

Saturday: What are you up to? Me, I'm hopping on a plane to jet off to NYC with Porkchop Jr. Jr. to visit my old college roommate and her adorable Israeli babies. Porkchop Jr. Sr. will be around, so you should keep him company. Otherwise he'll end up stuck at home listening to our rear tenant's drum circle.

Sunday: More NYC for me. See you Tuesday, suckas!

What's the word?

Tonight: Pre-K graduation! My niece is graduating from preschool, what with the little caps and the tiny gowns and the wee bitty diplomas. Actually the diplomas are the standard 8x10, I believe. I think Porkchop Jr. was maybe looking for some dinner with people, however.

Rest of the weekend: I forget. Maybe nothing? Sweating?

Brizzackets! Who won 'em? Me!!1!

That's right, chumps! My superior basketball knowledge and many hours of painstaking research and statistical analysis resulted in a fantastic and unprecedented victory in the Geeklife Yahoo brackets this year. While previous winners have accepted their win quietly, slipping humbly back into their regular lives, I intend to do no such thing. Victory is mine because I am the man!!! Woot!!

Also note how they celebrated my win down in North Carolina, where my true fan base is:

Brizzackets! Come on - it's a tradition!

Every year we set up college basketball brackets for Geeklife. Sure, these days nobody goes to GL, except to see where people are eating dinner on Friday nights. I am unable to let tradition die, however, and once again set up Yahoo Sports brackets under the name "Geeklife," and am inviting all to join. So there.

To do so:

1. You must have a yahoo account of some sort.

2. Go to http://tournament.fantasysports.yahoo.com

3. Find our group - it's called "Geeklife," and the ID# is 76065 and the password is "geeklife"

4. Pick some random, or carefully researched brackets. You can even make 2 different brackets this year - one stupid one and one serious one.

5. If you win, you get to brag about it all year and everyone will forever remember your amazing and insightful picks, just like the person who won last year... it was, um... not me, I don't think.

6. You can make your bracket beginning Sunday (3/15) night, and it has to be done by the start of the first game on Thursday morning (3/19).

Keep it old skool with Yahoo Sports!

Superfoot XV(?): February 1, 2009

Normal 0 Normal 0

Normal 0 Yes we can... come together to watch a sporting event though nobody really cares about either team.

Yes we can... study and mock the expensive commercials, even in these tough financial times.

Yes we can... ignore the football entirely and watch "Sesame Street Old School" or the Puppy Bowl or something on another TV in an adjoining room. Or just socialize.

Yes we can... celebrate football AND our new president in the traditional means - through the sharing of food and drink.

Who: You
What: Superfoot XV* (a party to watch Superbowl XLIII)
When: Sunday, February 1, 5:00 p.m.
Where: 4148 Connecticut #2, bka The Onion House
How: Bring a dish/drink to share that somehow keeps in the inaugeral/Obama theme.
Huh?: You know, like an ethnic dish from Kenya, Hawaii, Indonesia, Kansas or Chicago. Or something based on a bad pun, like "Yes we can-noli," or "Oysters Barrack-afeller." Or something inspired by a hope/challenge for the new administration ("Hammas hummus," "I-can-only-afford-generic-beer-in-this-economy Dirt Cheep Beer"). Bring whatever you like, but be prepared to defend your selection.

 * Previous counts had put this at Superfoot XIII, but as I recall, the first one (which I, admittedly, missed), was my freshman year of college, which, if you can believe it, was 15 years ago, making this Superfoot XV. But I could be wrong. It's hard to count that high.

Well, the Woot folks are wooting off in Dallas, so what are us other suckers going to do about it? Discuss your weekend plans below, if you have any. Me, I have no particular plans, except hopefully to try to lay more bricks tomorrow. I won't ask for your help this time. I wouldn't turn it down, however, if you're into that sort of thing.

I might be pursuaded to have dinner somewhere tonight. You?

Stop! Bracket time!

Hey - is that whole Geeklife Footy League still going on? Isn't Porkchop winning? Did he already win? Who has the attention span for those kinds of things in this fast-paced, modern world? Not me. I prefer my tournaments of sports about which I know little to last only a few short weeks. Which is why I set us up the College Basketball Tournament brizzackets again this year. All the fame and glory can be yours if you set up your bracket by the start of the first game on THURSDAY, MARCH 20. So get to guessing!

Real Life: December 28 - 30

So I'm already starting to get depressed about only having 5 more days before returning to work (only 3 more "vacation days!"). I can't imagine how you poor people who have to work this week feel. Let's turn those frowns upside down, chase away those winter blues, and other such painful metaphors. Or are they similes? Idioms?

Irregardless (sic), we have plans to make/share for the weekend. Did I already miss my annual chance to see Josh and Amy, or anybody else that makes a holiday trip to the StL? Nathan, perhaps? If anybody sees one of those type people, you should tell them to come to Happylife tonight. To be held.... somewhere. No great ideas at the moment. Sorry.

And what else is happening this weekend? I mean, sure, we'll all be pre-partying for John and Newman's "No Strangers Vomiting on the Porch Rockin' New Years Eve." The question is HOW we will be pre-partying. And also if "pre-partying" is a verb, especially for people our age. Discuss.

P.S. - Only 37 days, 6 hours and 52 minutes until Superfoot!!1! The theme is cheese!

Real Life: November 9-11, 2007

Go me, it's my birthday. We're gonna party like it's my birthday. That means we're gonna eat burritos, then go to Ted Drewes, then sit around our house for a bit. And that's just Friday night!!1! I guess we should go to El Burrito Loco, because that's a place at which I like to eat and it usually has seating for the zillions of people who will be clamoring to join me for dinner. Clamoring, I tell you.

But what of the rest of the weekend? I get to have birthday dinner with the family on Saturday, but we might sneak out after that to go see The Mountain Goats for free at the SLU Billiken Club. Or maybe go see that one other show that I forgot about that's at the Gargoyle.

And your weekend? Could it possibly be as awesome as mine? Discuss. And also find photos of adorable kittens for Demanda's story elsewhere on this fine website.

Okay, I don't have time to post stuff now, because I gotta go to work, but this is the start of a Real Life post, and you all have 9 hours to discuss your weekend plans before I get home and check the site again. Impress me, people!!!

Friday: Dinner somewhere. Art show at Snowflake/City Stock. The Early brothers spin records at Teh Royale.

Saturday: Maybe hiking w/ Demanda and her man? Movie night at the other Amanda's place.

Sunday: Dunno. Or maybe I do know and I forgot.

Avatars, avatars, avatars!

Really I need Dave to write this story, since avatars don't show up in personal blogs, like mine. But I can cut and paste mine in:

 Me!!!1!

Hey look - the Simpsons Movie website lets you make your own Simpsonsy avatar. Then you can download it and make it your Geeklife avatar. Or your avatar for another website that people actually visit more than once a week. It's all the fun of having an avatar on Dave's Wii without the bother of driving all the way over to his house to admire it later, though also without the charm of getting to watch it play doubles tennis.

I like that they used pieces of actual Simpsons characters. For instance, mine has Chief Wiggum's family's nose. So make a Simpsons avatar and post it here. Or make one and wait patiently for Dave to post another story to Geeklife for you (and your avatar) to comment on.
